Where shutterbugs unite to share their wisdom, skills and resources

This picture was taken in October last year on the Outeniqua pass on our way from Oudshoorn to Mosselbay. We took a trip for Ester’s birthday all along the Garden Route from PE to Plett, slept over in a guesthouse, drove through to Boggoms bay (just outside of Mosselbay), stopping everywhere along the way. We slept over in Boggoms bay and travelled to the Cango Caves just outside Oudshoorn the following day. We crawled through the caves and headed back to Boggoms bay and into this thick mist blanket covering the Outeniqua mountains. It was breathtaking (as you can see from the picture).
The following day we headed back, stopped in Plettenberg Bay again and went on a whale watching charter and that same thick mist covered the whole of Plett and in fact pretty much the whole of the Garden Route on our way back. I’ll post some pictures of the caves and the whales later.
About this picture:
f/5.6, 1/180s, ISO 100
Single RAW capture, coverted to pseudo HDR and tone mapped in Photomatix
Some tweaks and adjustments in Photoshop.
You created a very nice multi dimensional feel in this composition with the layered mountains. I like the contrasting lines of the mountains and the diagonal sunbeams filtering through the clouds. A pity the clouds at the top is a little bit washed out.
Wow, absolutely stunning. Now just where did you buy a camera that takes photos like this?
At Cash-n-Carry
This is and amazing shot of what I would call a fairly common subject – I don’t really know but guess that this is often seen on the Outeniquas but hardly ever photographed like this. Francois covered the technical feedback – To me the mood makes this pic – with comp and colour being the crucial factors excellently handled! Some great pp work as well – should serve as an example how to use post-processing to enhance an already great pic without making it looked ‘processed’ Well Done!
One nit – I do agree with Francois on the small burnout-area in the clouds.
Oh and I think Arnold would be thrilled to know it was a Canon as he is also a Canon shooter
The burned out area in the sky is where the sun is actually shining through the clouds, so it doesn’t matter how much one underexposes the shot, if you take a picture of the sun, it’s going to be blown out where the sun actually is. This is as it should it be. I mean can one really distinguish detail with the naked eye when looking into the sun? Also to me personally it doesn’t detract from the composition.
Congrat Pieter. Seems to me you you are not only a wedding photog but an expert on landscapes as well!
Thanks Adrie. To be honest if I had a bride nearby I would’ve stuck her in the foreground with her vail blowing in the wind
Well captured, good mood enhanced by the post processing.
I love it. If I had the facility I’d add it to my list of favorites.
Well done!
Johan, especially for you I have added a facility by which you can add photos to your favourites. At the bottom of each post you will find the link to add a post as a favourite (or to remove a post from your favourites). You will also find a link to view all the posts you have favourited. I have not tested this stuff properly yet but it should work just fine, I will keep an eye on it for the next day or so.
On the sidebar you will now also find a list of the top ten photos that have been favourited.
No need to tell the others about this, this can be just our little secret….
Ha-ha-ha on the ‘little secret part – I am preparing a newsletter right away…:)
Thanks Arnold, I think this can work very well!
Thanks Arnold (I’m a little slow this weekend so I only saw this now…;-)) It works great. I often come across images that I like to go back to and this makes it easy.
Pleasure Johan. You can also subscribe to any post you enjoy and you will be notified by mail should any comments be made on the relevant post.
