Autumn Rowers

This image was captured early on an autumn morning at the Emmerentia dam in Johannesburg. The sun’s first rays had just fallen on the tree tops. D700 and a 200-400mm lens.

  1. Denis Smit commented:

Really magic pic this. Wow what a scene. Excellently captured. IMO I would remove the ducks myself as it distracts the eye a bit.

  2. mike commented:

    and the two canoeists

  3. LeGrange commented:

Hallo Willem, this look like a painting..apart from the canoeists..love the colors and composition. Please go back and redo the photo, just wait for the canoeists to pass. Even the ducks can stay, call them back for another shoot… :)

  4. Ben Broughton commented:

Ek hou van die kleure en ook die mistigheid bo die water. Ek sou die eende uit gekloon het. Baie rustige toneel.

Thanks for your comments. I really would have liked it if you had made use of the 10-point scale. I am experimenting with some images and ratings out of 10 will be a great help. So if you have the time …..

  6. Faan commented:

Willem this is a magic shot, but I agree with Mike that it would be even better without the ducks and people.

  7. Pikkie commented:

The mood from the misty sunrise really makes this a very worthy shot – I agree on the ducks, but the canooists make the image tells a story together with the already great mood – Good work, Willem

  8. Kieta Weyer commented:

Hi Willem, by cropping the pic to just below the reflection of the canooists and a bit on the left, you will have less water and more balance.
Yes, feel that the canooists are part of the picture and the colours are beautiful.

    • Willem van der Post commented:

Kieta. You are correct, this image lacks balance. I have done some surgery on it – given it some foilage on the left and taken out the ducks but left the rowers. I think it might be better now. Will post it later – have to give others a chance.

  9. Frans Zietsman commented:

I agree… Leave the rowers in the photo, it ads to the peaceful “feel”. Would love to see your reworked version Willem.
